Dr. Mark Tunbridge; Ph.D

Dr. Mark Tunbridge holds a PhD (UCT, 2001) & post-doctoral internship in Clinical Psychology, completed through Royal Columbian Hospital - Adult Psychiatry & Tri-Cities Child & Youth Mental Health Services, Vancouver, Canada (2002/3).  His North American experience provided formal supervised training with Psycho-diagnosis, Psychotherapy and Clinical Neuro-psychology with adults, adolescents and children. In 2004, he scored in the top 15% for PhD candidates in the North American Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology.  He is an accredited Full Member (Reg. No. 602) of the South African Clinical Neuropsychological Association (click on www.sacna.co.za for access to SACNA’s website). He also holds two Masters degrees in Educational Psychology (University of Johannesburg, 1996; WITS, 1994) and, since 1997, has been registered as an educational psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (Reg. No. PS 0056200).

From 1997 to 2001, Dr. Tunbridge was founder and clinical director of the Child & Family Guidance Clinic, Cape Town, providing specialist psychology services for children, adolescents and their families. He is also founder and director of Context Consulting (PTY) Ltd, currently delivering social psychology services to corporate and community organisations. Dr. Mark Tunbridge has over 18 years of experience as psychotherapist, counsellor, psychological evaluator (including medico-legal assessment), coach, mediator, trainer and researcher - working with people from diverse cultural backgrounds in South Africa, Malawi and North America. He has lectured in psychological assessment at the University of Johannesburg at the post-graduate level, and has been guest lecturer in community health at the College of Medicine, University of Malawi, and in forensic psychology at the Department of Psychology, University of Cape Town.

Currently, Dr. Mark Tunbridge specializes in clinical psychological assessment (including clinical diagnosis, educational, career, emotional, neuropsychological, medico-legal) with adults, children and teens. Moreover he provides specialist psychotherapy, counselling and coaching for a wide range of clinical disorders and adjustment difficulties. His therapeutic orientation focuses on assisting children, youth, families, adults and couples overcome their life challenges and reach their full psychological potential for complete well-being. He integrates the therapeutic strengths of cognitive- behavioural therapy, psychoanalytic therapy, narrative therapy as well as coaching methods. With over 18 years of full time clinical experience with a wide range of clients on two continents, he integrates the therapeutic strengths of these well researched and effective therapeutic methods.

Melissa Bothma; M.Ed

Melissa is a registered Educational Psychologist (PS 0117528). Melissa completed her pre and postgraduate studies at Stellenbosch University obtaining the following qualifications: B.Ed. Psych Honours, Post Graduate Certificate in Education and BA Social Dynamics (Psychology & Sociology). Melissa is also an associate member of the South African Clinical Neuropsychological Association (Membership No. 1155).

After qualifying as a high school educator, school counsellor and registered psychometrist, Melissa worked at Rustenburg Girls’ High School in Rondebosch Cape Town as school counsellor and life orientation educator, which led to a particular interest in adolescent mental health and adolescents’ relationship with peers and parents. Melissa was also selected as a volunteer counsellor at Lifeline/Childline Cape Town.

Melissa went on to successfully complete the University of the Free State’s Masters programme in applied psychology, which integrated educational, clinical and counselling psychology principles and applications. Resulting in the acquisition of broader knowledge and practice in the field of psychology. 

The completion of her internship also took place at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, working at various mainstream schools, special needs schools, a drug rehabilitation centre in and around Bloemfontein as well as at the  university Student Counselling Centre.

Her research focus has involved adolescents’ experience of the formation of relationships on MXit (MXit is a type of CMC- Computer Mediated Communication), and she has a particular affinity with the needs of children and youth in the 21st Century. 

Melissa draws eclectically from a range of therapeutic modalities in order to suit the unique needs of each individual and speaks both fluent English and Afrikaans. She provides individual psychotherapy, counselling, psychological assessment and career guidance with children, adolescents and adults.

Richard
Richard Vergunst; M.A

Richard Vergunst is a registered Counselling Psychologist with the Health Professions Counsel of South Africa (HPCSA Reg. No. PS 0054488). He completed his Master's degree at the University of Cape Town (UCT) in 1995. He has over 15 years of experience in working with adults, adolescents & children in a variety of settings. Although Richard's first language is English, he works in both English and Afrikaans with all ages including; adults, adolescents & children.

Richard Vergunst provides specialised Health Psychology psychotherapy and assessment services with all age groups. Health Psychology is a specialist field of psychology involving managing all matters pertaining to physical illness on a psychological level. Health Psychology also involves managing stress in healthy ways by finding effective coping strategies in order to deal with our stressful world and prevent illness. He provides Psycho-neuro-immunology (PNI) interventions which looks at the relationship between the mind, body and spirit.

In therapy, he addresses issues such as; what role does lifestyle have on illness? How can we cope with illness and how do we modify our behaviour?

Richard also utilizes psychometric tests that can assist in identifying psychopathology, strengths and weaknesses, making career decisions, provide insight into personality aspects and unconscious motivations for behaviour.

Richard is in the process of completing his Ph.D degree providing research findings to international institutions regarding the accessibility of health care services in rural communities in South Africa. Richard has a passion for therapy and loves working with adults, adolescents & children and utilises a wide variety of therapeutic modalities in order to best meet the needs of his clients.

His work with adults includes; dealing with adjustment, loss and bereavement, couples and marriage counselling, sex therapy as a sex therapist, if necessary, as well as career counselling and coaching.

Richard provides the following psychological services for children & adolescents: psycho-educational, neuropsychological, school-readiness, and career assessments as well as psychotherapy with children in the form of play therapy and adolescent appropriate interventions.

Benita Southgate.
Benita Southgate; M.A

Benita Southgate’s career trajectory progressed to that of becoming Principal Psychologist at the student counseling service of the University of Cape Town (UCT). Benita is a registered Counselling Psychologist with the HPCSA (PS0058203) with over 18 years experience in higher education, corporate and private practice settings. She qualified at the University of the Western Cape initially as an Educator and thereafter proceeded to complete her Masters in Psychology at the same university.

She worked at the Western Cape Education Department with at-risk young people. Her work involved counseling, management of the counseling service, management of psychiatric emergencies and the clinical oversight of a team of Psychologists.

She is a registered Group Analyst with the Centre for Group Analytic Studies and able to offer group therapy. She has developed the skill to assist clients with emotional regulation and stress management through the practice of mindfulness. This approach ensures that each client has an individualized psychotherapeutic experience focusing on assisting clients with problems of everyday living and most especially with personal growth and understanding.

A key aspect to her approach involves the use of psychometric testing to be able to provide a unique, comprehensive and evidence-based intervention. This includes educational, career, neuropsychological and personality assessments.

Benita draws on the richness of psychodynamic theories and cognitive-behavioural approaches. She provides psychotherapy to children, adolescents, adults and couples.

Dr. Kevin Thomas; Ph.D

Dr. Thomas holds a PhD (University of Arizona, 2002) degree in Clinical Psychology. He completed his internship in neuropsychology at the University of Florida (2001/2) and is an accredited Full Member (Reg. No.652) of the South African Clinical Neuropsychological Association. Dr. Thomas is senior lecturer in clinical neuropsychology and neuroscience at the University of Cape Town.  He has a special interest in neuropsychological assessment and related counselling with the elderly.

Colleen Law; M.A

Colleen is a registered clinical psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (PS 0093351). She has extensive experience in psychotherapy with children, teens, adults, couples and families. Colleen draws eclectically from a range of therapeutic modalities in order to suit the unique needs of each individual. Through psychotherapy, she facilitates skills growth and personal awareness in adults, to more effectively manage and fulfil challenges in their work, marriage and family environments. Through play therapy, she facilitates a way for children to express their experiences and feelings through a natural, self-guided, self-healing process.

Colleen also has considerable experience in psychological assessment including neuropsychological, medico-legal, educational and career guidance services to adults, teens and children. Through psychological assessment she believes in enabling individuals and parents to make informed decisions in directing future life choices.

Colleen holds a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology and a Masters degree in Research Psychology, (both cum laude from Potchefstroom University (2004, 2005). She completed her internship at Witrand Psychiatric Hospital and Institute for Psychotherapy at Potchefstroom University in 2005. Since then Colleen has been employed at Addington Hospital (affiliated to University of Kwa Zulu Natal) where from 2009 she headed up the psychology unit. In addition to providing psychotherapy and psychometric assessment services to the general public, she also lectured applied psychology to medical students at Nelson Mandela Medical School, and trained and supervised clinical psychology interns and trauma counsellors.

Charl Marais; B. Psych

Charl Marais holds a Psychology Honours degree and is a Registered Psychometrist with the Health Professions Counsel of South Africa (Practice number PMT 0090379). Charl completed his Psychology Honours Degree at the University of South Africa (UNISA) and completed his Bachelors degree at Rhodes University.

Charl has a Bcom Honours degree and a marketing degree combined with his 4 years of Corporate work experience alongside his Psychometrics. He has started and managed graduate programs for corporate companies alongside training and development of staff.

Charl completed his formal Psychometry Internship at Psymetric and a (B-Psyc Equivalence) at Stellenbosch University.

Charl Heads the Psychometry Division at Dr. Mark Tunbridge & Associates. He assists in managing all Psychometry related functions with our team of Clinical, Educational, Counselling and Neuropsychologists. Charl also coordinates all workshops and our Community Outreach initiatives as well as managing the Marketing for the practice.
